Orange Sherbet Smoothie - Eat Spin Run Repeat

On what was one of our hotter Vancouver summer days recently, I was walking down by the beach with a friend when we spotted an ice cream truck. Actually, said ice cream truck was heard playing “It’s a Small World” before we spotted it, but nevertheless, it led to a conversation about favourite childhood frozen treats.

As a kid, I remember our basement freezer – conveniently just steps from my bedroom door – being regularly stocked with everything from simple Popsicles (which apparently aren’t so simple any more) and Jolly Rancher freezies (sour green apple ones were the BEST) to ice cream sandwiches, candy cane ice cream at Christmas time and big pails of neapolitan ice cream. Was I the only kid that called it Napoleon ice cream?

Then there was the whole sorbet and sherbet category. Did you know that there’s a difference? According to, sorbet it simply fruit and sugar, whereas sherbet is fruit, sugar, and a creamy ingredient like milk, cream, egg whites or gelatin. Occasionally we’d go to Baskin Robbins as kids and my choice was almost always rainbow sherbet, but when it came to at-home desserts, I distinctly remember enjoying lots of Lucerne orange sherbet.

We didn’t make a stop at the ice cream truck during our walk along the beach, but thanks to our conversation, for the rest of the day I had orange sherbet on my mind. Because I didn’t have the patience to wait for anything to freeze, I decided to re-create it – still super orange-y and refreshing, but in smoothie form.

I was looking for maximum orange flavour in this recipe, with a nice balance of tartness, sweetness, and a little touch of creamy. Rather than using dairy to create that creaminess like you’d find in a true sherbet, I used vanilla protein powder which totally did the trick.

For tartness, I used orange zest, frozen oranges and Sibu Seven Omega 7 Pure, a liquid supplement consisting of 100% pureed sea buckthorn berries. (You can read more about why I love these little superfoods here). Sibu Seven is very tart on its own, but worked perfectly in this smoothie. If you need a simple substitute for the 3 tbsp in this recipe, I’d recommend 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice and 1 tbsp fresh orange juice.

Orange Sherbet Smoothie

Cook Time: 0 mins

Ingredients (1 serving)


  • Add all ingredients except the ice and chia seeds to your blender jug and blend until completely smooth.
  • Pour in the chia seeds and ice. Let them sit for about 2 minutes, allowing the chia seeds to soak up some of the liquid and thicken the smoothie’s consistency.
  • Blend once more until the ice is completely crushed.
  • Pour and serve!

  1. Do you always put Vega protein products in your smoothie? I was just thinking since you’ve had stomach issues that maybe subbing it with something simple like a few tbsp’s of hemp seeds would help instead? I wish I could love Vega but it always messes with my stomach. Beautiful photos!

    1. Hi Jen!
      I normally put Vega products of some sort into my smoothies, yes, but if you have a favourite protein powder (or other source) you could totally try that too. Adding hemp seeds is a great idea! I’d suggest using a little vanilla extract if you’re going to go that route as well, and if you want a slightly creamy consistency without adding dairy (if that’s a problem for you as well), then an almond or coconut-based yogurt would probably do the trick.

      I find that Vega products work really well with my digestion (since they’re corn, soy, gluten, and dairy free), but I know some people find Vega One a little difficult to take every day. I’m not sure if it’s the greens blend in it that might be the cause, but I haven’t heard of many friends/readers who have the same issues with the Performance Protein. Might be worth a shot if you haven’t already tried it!
