One of my vivid childhood memories is the weekend hours I used to spend with my cousin Ian, getting up to all sorts of fun adventures at my grandpa’s house. In the winter we went tobogganing in the park across the street, and in the summers we’d pick every raspberry we could possibly find on the bushes in the garden. When we’d exhausted the outdoor activities, we’d watch Nickelodeon for hours while eating bags of Ruffles, all with the goal of finding the most perfectly round chip. And, when our bellies were full from raspberries, Ruffles and stale gummy bears, we made potions.

Don’t worry – these weren’t edible potions that we were trying to feed anyone, and we weren’t casting spells or anything like that. These were concoctions that we’d use to ‘clean’ the tiles in my grandpa’s basement. I can’t remember what exactly was in them – likely a lot of baking soda, vinegar, and whatever else we could find in the pantry. We made some spectacularly chalky, dusty, filmy messes, but luckily there were never any serious disasters. Well, none that I can remember anyway.

To this day, I still love being a little recipe mixologist for things I use around the house. I’m not just talking about food recipes (because you guys already know I do plenty of that!) but food items are often still involved. Natural cleaning products can be really simple and cost-effective, and it feels great to know that my home can be clean without the dangers of breathing in toxic chemicals found in traditional products. But a girl’s gotta have her pampering time, and as a self-labeled clean beauty product junkie, some of my faves are the bath + body treats I’ve made myself.

Over the holidays I shared this DIY Whipped Peppermint Body Butter, and I don’t know about you, but now that spring is on the way, I’ve been thinking a lot about exfoliating! Gotta get glowy, right? With cute flats, strappy sandals, wedges and heels all in my closet waiting to be worn, I’ve been working on new body scrubs that are…

  • 100% clean and non-toxic
  • Easy and cost-effective to make
  • Effective at exfoliating, while also beneficial and nourishing for the skin

I’m pleased to report that the DIY Mojito Body Scrub I’ve got for you today satisfies all of the above, and it smells good enough to eat! Made with simple yet powerful ingredients like pink Himalayan sea salt, raw honey and a few high quality oils, you’ll be able to slough off dull cells, cleanse the skin, add moisture and reduce inflammation – all while enjoying a super fresh, zesty lime scent!

Here’s a quick look at what each ingredient offers:

Pink Himalayan sea salt

  • Contains tons of valuable trace minerals, including iron, phosphorous, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride
  • Magnesium in particular is one mineral known to be effective for reducing muscle soreness and promoting relaxation. (If you want to take that up a notch, try epsom salts instead or in combination with pink Himalayan sea salt)
  • Depending on how finely you grind it, can provide a more gentle exfoliation than sugar scrubs because the particles are smaller
  • May stimulate the lymphatic system when massaged on the skin, making it helpful for detoxification
  • Has a gorgeous pink hue!

I use this sea salt from Thrive Market because it’s ethically sourced and unrefined, which means that more of the health benefits and minerals are preserved.

Extra virgin olive oil + coconut oil

  • Both oils help to rehydrate the skin, while the sea salt does the exfoliation work. Together, your rough spots will soon be baby-skin soft!
  • EVOO is rich in vitamins A and E, so using it in this formula helps deliver powerful antioxidants to the skin
  • Coconut oil has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, so it cleanses while also balancing the skin’s fatty acid levels. It also smells faaaabulous!

Note: I recommend using coconut oil sparingly like I’ve done in the recipe below, using other carrier oils that are liquid at room temperature for the rest of the formula. Too much coconut oil can clog drains, so if you want to add more oil to your recipe, try more EVOO or light oils such as almond, apricot or jojoba.

Raw honey

  • High in antioxidants, plus anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. As a result, raw honey can cleanse the skin and clean pores effectively and gently, while reducing redness.
  • Has humectant properties (in other words, it holds on to water), making it a great natural moisturizer

Ginger

  • One of the most potent anti-inflammatory foods we know of on earth (largely because of one of its most powerful compounds, gingerol). That’s a cool reputation to have!
  • Also packed with antioxidants (great for anti-aging) which protect against free radicals
  • Works as a natural antiseptic, helping to kill infections caused by bacteria
  • Can help to boost circulation when rubbed into the skin
  • Used in natural healing to reduce nausea, stomach upset and headaches
  • Used in aromatherapy to relieve anxiety and fear

Lime

  • Zest of the lime works with the sea salt to exfoliate, and also provides a stronger lime scent.
  • Citrus fruits have an energizing effect, making this scrub a great one to apply in the shower while you’re still waking up in the morning!

Alright, let’s get mixing!

All-Natural DIY Ginger Lime Body Scrub

  • Author: Angela Simpson
  • Total Time: 10 mins
  • Yield: about 1 cup 1x

Description

Made with 100% clean ingredients, this All-Natural DIY Ginger Lime Body Scrub recipe will make you feel energized, invigorate your skin, and soothe sore muscles – all at the same time! Use it to exfoliate during your morning shower and get ready to bare you super glowy, soft skin.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup pink Himalayan sea salt, pulsed until finely ground in a food processor or coffee grinder
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp melted virgin coconut oil*
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 35 drops ginger essential oil
  • juice of 1/2 lime + 1 tsp zest

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together until well-combined.
  2. Store into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.

Notes

I recommend avoiding adding any more coconut oil than the amount recommended above as it may clog drains when used in larger amounts. If you would like your scrub to be more oil-rich, feel free to add more olive oil, or use a different, light carrier oil such as jojoba, apricot or sweet almond oil.
