Let’s talk hydration.
Specifically, staying hydrated when it’s cold outside and the last thing you feel like doing is drinking water – or at least that’s how I feel when I’m cold.
As someone who loves high sweat activities, hydration during training and races is a topic that’s often at the front of my mind. Without paying attention to it, we risk running into nasty situations like muscle cramps, dizziness, overheating and generally feeling crappy. But as we all know, workouts aren’t the only times when fluids are important. Just because we’re not sweating doesn’t mean we don’t need them.
As a quick refresher (pardon the pun), consuming enough water allows us to:
- Maintain energy levels, alertness and focus
- Properly digest food
- Avoid overeating (because sometimes your body isn’t hungry, it’s just thirsty)
- Transport nutrients from our food to our cells through the bloodstream
- Regulate body temperature
- Naturally detox and flush harmful toxins out of our bodies
- Grow healthy hair, nails and skin cells
On that last point, a number of factors have led me to dig really deep into natural beauty lately. It’s finally sunk in that I’m in the final year of my 20’s (WHAT?!) so I’ve been totally geeking out on clean skincare, makeup and personal care products – all the things.
On one day in particular, I was running errands and caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror. My skin looked super dry, so the minute I got home, I chugged a glass of water. My makeup came off and on went a super hydrating face mask. Mission: Deliver moisture to ALL. THE. CELLS!! (Side note: If natural beauty and skincare is of interest to you, stay tuned because I’ll be talking about it lots in the next little while.)
This experience reminded me that cooler temperatures are coming, and my natural tendency is to drink less. We know that what we put on our skin is just as important as what we put inside our bodies, that skin is our largest organ, and that over 50% of an adult’s body is made up of water. Yet some days it feels like suuuuch a struggle, doesn’t it? Thankfully, a diet full of water-packed plant-based foods helps to deliver some of that hydration, with the added bonus of other nutrients in the process.
With this in mind, and as part of my recent focus on skin health, I’ve been experimenting with seasonal water infusions. If you share my cold weather struggle, or if you just don’t love drinking plain water, I think you’ll enjoy these too.
I made the recipes below – let’s call them water cocktails to be classy – in 3 reusable bottles I received from Dopper. In case you haven’t heard of them, Dopper is a company whose mission it is to achieve a world where…
- our oceans are free of plastic
- single-use plastic is a thing of the past
- everyone has access to safe drinking water.
Fiver percent of every bottle sold supports the Dopper Foundation, which finances water and sanitation projects where people need it most. The ones I received are 450mL in size and super lightweight. They’re also not just water bottles, because the lid doubles as a cup. Cute right?
Alrighty, cocktail recipe time!
3 water infusions to make staying hydrated more delicious
Water Cocktail #1: Spa Day
- ½ cup sliced or spiralized English cucumber
- 4 small sliced strawberries
- 3 thin lime slices
- 3-5 fresh mint leaves
Water Cocktail 2: Cranberry Mandarin
- ¼ cup fresh or frozen cranberries, lightly crushed to release juices
- ½ peeled mandarin orange, broken into segments
- 3 thinly sliced pieces of fresh ginger root
- chilled cranberry tea
Water Cocktail 3: Spiced Apple Pear
- ¼ thinly sliced apple (I like tart ones such as Honeycrisp or Pink Lady)
- ¼ thinly sliced ripe pear
- 3 thinly sliced pieces of fresh ginger root
- 1 cinnamon stick
- chilled ginger tea
For each of these, simply put all the ingredients (minus the liquid) into your water bottle, then fill the remaining space to the top with the water or iced herbal tea. I’ve noticed that the flavour isn’t very strong immediately, but if you leave these to infuse for at least an hour or two, they taste fantastic.
Dopper also advises that it’s important to properly clean and dry the bottles after use, and store it without the cap on. I’ve had water bottles in the past that start to smell… well, not so nice, after having flavoured liquids in them, so this definitely helps.
