I hope you’re in the mood for arts and crafts today, friends. I had something completely different planned for today’s post, but after spending too much time playing with fruit in my kitchen yesterday, I’ve decided to save it for next week.
I’m not sure exactly when I first discovered Edible Arrangements, but ever since, I’ve wanted one. The only problem? They’re EXPENSIVE! The smallest arrangement is $36, and the largest (an XL-banquet size colossal fruit extravaganza) costs $309. Even for $36, you could buy an enormous amount of fruit at the market!
Somewhere during the process of making a fruit salad yesterday morning, I decided to take it upon myself to make a flower bouquet. I had fantasies about mine looking as beautiful as the ones from Edible Arrangements, and even though it doesn’t quite match up, I’m still pretty proud of it.
And you wanna know something? It was SUPER easy! If you’re a fruit lover like me, I’m pretty sure you’ll have a blasty making one for yourself as well. I doubt the folks at Edible Arrangements will be pounding on my door any time soon asking for my skills (I’ve got a long way to go before I earn that kind of pro status), but here’s how I did it:
What you need:
- Cookie cutters – I used flowers, but you could also do stars, butterflies and hearts if you want
- A melon baller – optional, I used this to make the flower centers. You could also use berries if you don’t have a melon baller
- Wooden skewers
- A head of napa cabbage, radicchio, or other object that you can use to secure the skewers inside of – iceberg lettuce would also do the trick
- Curly kale, or something else green and leafy
- A vase or bowl to hold the arrangement in – a wide base works best
- Assorted fruit (obviously!) – I used melons, strawberries, kiwis, blueberries, and pineapple
Step 1: Put your cabbage in the bottom of the bowl or vase. If you’re using a wide-bottomed container, you could put 2 side by side to fill the space.
Step 2: Cut up your fruit. Use your cookie cutters to make the shapes you want in the arrangement, and use the melon baller to scoop out the centers for the flowers (or use something else like strawberries, blueberries, or grapes if you don’t have a melon baller).
Step 3: Start arranging the skewers (your stems) securely by stabbing them into the cabbage/radicchio/lettuce/whatever you’ve got in the base of your bowl or container.
Step 4: Thread some of the fruit on to additional skewers. (I did this with the cantaloupe.) I found it easier to thread the fruit on the non-pointy end so that I could stick the skewer into the cabbage more easily. Stick these into the outside edges of the arrangement.
Step 5: To add a little greenery, insert leaves of kale amongst the skewers, leaving some showing over the top of the container.
Step 6: Thread the remaining fruit onto the skewers, and keep adding more until you’ve filled out the space.
Step 7: Enjoy!
And here are all the steps in one handy dandy (easy-to-pin!) graphic:
So tell me…
- Have you ever made a fruit arrangement? What did you put in yours?
- What’s the latest DIY/crafty project you took on? Did you get totally sucked in and carried away with it like I did? How did it turn out?
One last thing! The winner of my Nature’s Path Qi’a giveaway is Ariana! Congrats girl! I’ll be emailing you shortly to get your shipping info.
Have a great day, friends! 🙂
OMGOSH THIS IS THE CUTEST THING EVER!!!
and best playdate activity too.
thank you thank you.
I think your daughter would have so much fun making one!
so pretty! love it! i’m so not a crafty person with artsy stuff or food but you did an awesome job!
Thanks Linz! I’m not normally patient with my food – it’s a miracle this little creation stayed together as long as it did before I ate all the flowers!
Ahh it turned out so well! I see Edible Arrangement commercials on tv ALL THE TIME and have always been so jealous of how pretty they look! Your looks professionally done!
Thank you so much Christine! I know, those commercials kill me. I’ve never actually set foot in one of their store locations, but I don’t think I’d be able to stop myself from splurging if I did!
Deliciousness all around. Off to the farmer’s market tomorrow so may pick up some extra fruit to try to make my own. Excited and thank you
You’re more than welcome, Jesse! I’d love to see a pic of your creation!
Wow. I actually thought for a second that the photo of the finished one was edible arrangements! lol. You did SUCH a great job. Made it look so easy!
Thanks Daniella! The part that wasn’t easy was stopping myself from eating all the fruit as I was putting it together! Luckily I cut tons so had plenty left over. 🙂
so cute. and congrats to Ariana too.!
Angela, this is too cute! I saw your pic of this on Instagram and loved it! I never knew how easy it was to make these.. I’ll have it try it out!
Thanks so much Christine! Have fun, and send me a pic if you make one too!
Angela – I’m super impressed with this! I have actually ordered the real Edible Arrangement for someone, and it is darn expensive. I didn’t even consider how easy it would be to do yourself. I can’t wait to make it for someone.
Thanks Sarah! Don’t wait – that someone can be yourself (that’s who I made mine for!) 😉
So easy and one of those things that you bonk yourself on the head saying “why did I spend $80 dollars on this when I could’ve made it a lot cheaper!” Pinned and doing! Thanks!
Exactly! Thanks so much Angela!
If making for a party, how can the fruit keep fresh?
Hi Angie! I would make it as close to the time of the party as you can. If you cover it and keep it in the fridge, I’m guessing it would last a couple of hours.
Do you know where I can buy the tools?
Do you mean to cut the fruit? I just used cookie cutters – any shapes you want will be fine, but I recommend sticking to smaller ones so the fruit doesn’t get too heavy and start falling off! 🙂
This. is. incredible. I’m making this for my parents this thanksgiving week! They’re big fruit breakfast eaters (that’s all they eat) and I never thought to make it more special for them. Oh my gosh can’t wait!! Pinning
Aw so glad you liked this Natalia! I hope your parents are thrilled with the fruit bouquet you create for them. Take a pic if you have a chance – would love to see!
I got this website from my buddy who informed me about this site and now this time I
am visiting this web page and reading very informative articles at this time.
