Hello there!

Happy Monday, friends. ? How was your weekend? I’m coming back from mine feeling pretty darn good, re-energized and ready to start a fresh. See, work has been pretty nutty lately with a lot of change going on, and by Wednesday of last week I just felt scattered. Nothing terrible or anything, but just not 100%. While not shy, I’m definitely an introvert, and I knew a weekend consisting of quality time with loved ones and quiet alone time with myself was exactly what was needed. Turns out, it did the trick!

So what did that look like? Lots of hiking with friends (more about that on Wednesday), some good sweat, rest, and ….. wait for it…. crafts! You’ve probably heard me start to talk about making my own beauty products as part of an effort to green up all areas of my life beyond food. This is something I’ve been working on for a while now, and while it’s easy to just buy natural beauty care products (we’re very spoiled for choice these days), I’ve met plenty that I didn’t love from a functional perspective. (I’m looking at you, natural deodorants!) I also haven’t properly allowed myself the time to learn about what ingredients to watch out for, and the actual impact of those nasty ingredients. So I’ve been learning, testing, and DIY-ing up a storm.

Not long ago I went on a serious Pinterest spree to find recipes for natural body scrubs, lotions, lip balms, salves, deodorant and toothpaste. And don’t worry – I’m not turning into a total hippie, I promise. This was mostly browsing and pinning for later, but it led to scribbling out my own versions, acquiring ingredients, containers and oils, and putting them to the test. I’m going to post some of those recipes here on the blog next week, and I’ll assure you in advance that they were SO simple. If I can do it, anyone can. Expect a step-by-step tutorial so you can give it a go, and maybe we can all start swapping beauty care recipes soon!

While we’re on the topic of skincare, you may remember the collagen-infused smoothie and matcha latte I posted a couple of weeks ago. There’s a new seasonal blend in my Vitamix these days – also with major skin benefits – that is just SO good that I couldn’t resist sharing it here. Here’s what’s going on with the ingredients, and as you’ll soon see, antioxidants are the name of the game:

Cherries + blueberries

Two of the most antioxidant-rich fruits on earth, these gems contain compounds that protect our cells and combat free radicals in the body. They’re rich in vitamin C and fibre, have been shown to reduce inflammation1 and add natural sweetness to this smoothie. Best of all, they’re in season so this is a great way to get your fill!

Sea buckthorn puree

You’ve probably seen this superfood rising in popularity over the past couple of years and it’s one I’ve written about in the past. To refresh your memory, sea buckthorn is an extremely resilient plant and the berries contain over 190 bioactive compounds that support our health. They’re also a source of all four omega fatty acids (3, 6, 7 and 9).

Sea buckthorn seed oil can be used to help clear up skin issues including acne, dry skin and eczema, and I’ve even found it helpful for relief on days when I’ve had a liiiiiiittle bit too much sun! As for the puree (which I get from Sibu), it’s high in vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K. It’s also got a very tart taste, giving this smoothie a nice zippy flavour.

Chia Seeds

You already know about these I’m sure, but as a memory refresher, they’re loaded with vitamins and minerals, fibre, omega 3 + 6 fatty acids, and are a plant-based source of protein. And of course, like the other ingredients described here, they’re antioxidant superstars.2 When it comes to skin, this means that chia seeds can help to speed up our skin’s ability to heal, prevent future damage, and therefore, slow the signs of aging.

  1. I try to drink a lot of water to hydrate my skin and detox it. I also do a mud mask a few times a week.

  2. Sweet! Thank you for the opportunity to win this great prize! I drink a lot of water and green tea. I use facial sunscreen religiously (as opposed to the baby oil I used when I was growing up EEK!!). I cleanse my skin and apply a moisturizing serum every night before going to bed, and do a deep cleansing mud mask a couple of times a week. I take omega oil capsules, more for general health reasons, but they also are great for my skin. I guess eating a lot of fresh (raw) vegetables and fruits and trying to incorporate fish regularly into my diet also helps out with my skin, but that’s just a general lifestyle choice rather than because I think it will bring me good skin!

  3. I try to drink a lot of water and cleanse regularly. Moisturizer and sun screen are also important.

  4. I’m always on the lookout for natural products to help take care of my skin. So far the one item I’ve found works the best has been virgin cold pressed rosehip seed oil for my face. It’s a dry oil and it’s beautiful. It does go on bright orange but by morning my skin is dewy and glows. One thing that has dramatically helped the rest of my body has been dry brushing. My keratosis pilaris is basically gone!
I have tried so many moisturizers and would love to finally find a product that I can wear during the day to help protect my skin.
Would love to hear if anybody has had success with black heads and jojoba oil? Xoxo

  5. I use lotion for my dry skin; I limit how often I wear makeup and the makeup I use contains natural ingredients.

  6. I have been wanting to try Sibu products for a loooonnnng time. My favorite way way to maintain healthy skin is pretty boring: drinking TONS of water. I live in Colorado where it’s 5 percent humidity on the daily. It’s a super harsh climate, so it is essential to stay hydrated all day. I drink about a gallon a day in addition to herbal teas or other healthy beverages! I think the Sibu products will really help to protect my skin from the harsh Colorado climate!

  7. Subscribed and following you both! I always wash my skin every night and morning. I am careful to purchase paraben free face lotion and to wear sunscreen.

  8. thanks for the giveaway, angela!
for skincare, i focus on relaxation! esp for the face – i think about not frowning, keeping my eyes relaxed, etc. laugh lines are ok, though! and i believe in the power of drinking water!

  9. I try to use minimal products on my face as that works best for me. I drink lots of water and try to eat healthy, and exercise.

  10. I don’t currently have a skincare regime to rave about like some. I make sure to drink lots of water and sometimes moisturize with coconut oil. I’ve just turned thirty and i’m thinking it’s about time that I show my skin some love. I have a friend who swears by the Nourishing Face Cream that Sibu makes — I’ll have to try it out!

  11. I try to drink a lot of water, also I clean my face everyday and use natural products. I’m subscribed and already following Eat Spin Run Repeat and Sibu on instagram 🙂
